Before you say anything, listen: I know that drowning is a serious issue.  I mean, it’s among my most feared ways to die. We don’t mean to make light of drowning. We aren’t looking for a deluge of hate mail here. Calm down, take a deep breath of air, and relax.

Still, walk-a-thons for a cause never made sense to me. In some cases you raise money based on how much you walk; at least then you’re walking for a specific reason. I would argue that the sponsors are being a little bit childish by tying their donation to the distance you can travel on foot, but that’s their business.

In most cases, though, the walk is just sort of an event that everyone can rally around. Presumably it helps people remember to donate, which is good, as long as people also remembered to plan the route. Usually it doesn’t end up with everyone falling off a bridge, but then, usually Greg isn’t involved.
